Respite care

Time to rest, with your mind at ease.

Respite care at home in Totnes and across the South Hams. Short breaks in the person's own home — an afternoon, a night, a fortnight — so whoever does the caring can stop for a while without worrying.

Respite care

Caring for someone you love can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding. Taking a break is important, and arranging respite care can give family members and unpaid carers time to rest, attend appointments, spend time with others or simply recharge, knowing their loved one is in safe and caring hands.

Our respite service provides friendly, dependable support in the comfort and familiarity of the person's own home. It can be arranged for a short period, overnight, for several days or for longer stays, depending on the individual's needs and our availability.

Respite care is not only there for holidays or emergencies. It can also be arranged regularly, to give families a well-earned break and help make caring responsibilities more manageable over the longer term.

What respite support can include

Depending on the individual's assessed needs, respite support may include:

  • Companionship and emotional support
  • Preparing meals and encouraging good nutrition and hydration
  • Maintaining familiar routines
  • Light household tasks and laundry
  • Shopping and collecting prescriptions
  • Support to attend appointments
  • Accompanying the person on outings and visits
  • Encouragement with hobbies, interests and daily activities
  • Medication reminders and agreed support within the carer's training and responsibilities
  • Support with moving safely around the home
  • Reassurance and agreed support during the night
  • Regular updates for family members, where appropriate and with the person's consent

Once we have completed the CQC registration process and our registration has been confirmed, respite support may also include regulated activities such as personal care, where this has been assessed, agreed and included within the individual's care plan.

Why respite care can be so important

Family carers often place the needs of their loved one before their own. Over time this can become tiring, and may affect their own health and wellbeing.

Having regular opportunities to rest can help carers continue in their caring role while also making time for their own needs, relationships and responsibilities. Respite care can provide:

  • Time to rest and recharge
  • Reassurance that a loved one is supported
  • An opportunity to attend appointments or important events
  • Time with other family members and friends
  • Support during holidays or periods of illness
  • Greater balance and flexibility within family life
  • Peace of mind during short breaks away from home

For the person receiving support, respite care also offers companionship, a change of company and the opportunity to enjoy their usual interests and routines. We take time to get to know each person, so that the experience feels comfortable, familiar and positive.

Support planned around the individual

Before respite care begins, we complete a full assessment to understand the person's needs, wishes, routines, home environment and preferred way of living. We then create an individual support plan and carefully match them with a suitable member of our team.

We will discuss everything in advance, including routines, meals, medication arrangements, interests, appointments, important contacts and what helps the person feel most comfortable and reassured.

Where possible we recommend arranging respite care in advance. We understand that unexpected situations arise, and will always do our best to help, subject to staff availability and our ability to meet the person's needs safely.

Live-in respite arrangements

For respite care involving a carer staying in the person's home, the carer will require a clean and comfortable private bedroom, access to a bathroom and reliable Wi-Fi. A weekly shopping allowance must also be provided to cover the carer's food and essential groceries.

To ensure the carer remains well rested and able to provide consistent, high-quality support, they will require a minimum uninterrupted two-hour break each day, as well as suitable time to rest and sleep.

We will arrange break times around the person's usual routine wherever possible. If someone needs to remain with them while the live-in carer takes their break, we can arrange additional cover at an agreed extra cost.

If regular or extended support is required during the night, additional night care may be recommended. This will be considered during the assessment and discussed openly before the service begins.

Reassurance for the whole family

We understand that placing the care of a loved one into someone else's hands can feel like a big step. Our team will take the time to listen, answer questions and make sure everyone feels comfortable with the arrangements.

Throughout the respite period we will remain in contact and review the support as needed. Families and representatives will be kept involved where appropriate and with the person's consent.

CQC registration notice

We are currently progressing through the CQC registration process. In the meantime we can continue to provide our day centre, live-in companionship, respite and wellbeing services where regulated care is not required.

Until our registration is confirmed, we are unable to provide regulated activities, including personal care in England.

Talk it through with us.

If you are not sure whether we can help, please ring. We will always be open about what we can and cannot provide at the moment, and there is no obligation either way.
